Congratulations to Ashton First School on a joyful and very nostalgic celebration of the Queen’s 90th birthday. The setting for our street party was a sight to behold and befitted a royal celebration with Union Jack bunting zig-zagging the playground as well as beautiful Union Jack flags made by Acorn Class decorating the fencing. Each table was fit for a Queen with bright red, white and blue tablecloths, decorated jam jars filled with flags and wonderful cake displays.
Asking the children to make their own hats and the grown-ups to wear something red, white and blue was a fantastic idea and added a sea of colour to the party.
Grandparents and parents joined their children for a banquet of picnic food as nostalgic music played in the background and there was lots of excited chatter. The children had a wonderful game of pass the parcel in the field whilst the ‘oldies’ enjoyed a cup of tea and more chat before everyone got on their feet for a brilliant treasure hunt based on a royal quiz with answers to questions hidden around the school. I know the grandparent in our party took great delight in the guided tour of the classrooms, getting to see first-hand all the good work that is being done.
The highlight of the afternoon had to be when the gates opened to a beautiful vintage car which pulled up and the red carpet was rolled down the playground to receive our special guest, none other than Her Royal Highness Queen Freya, accompanied by her own chauffeur Grandpa Jelfs. The children revelled in the excitement.
Each child left with a commemorative coin, a wonderful memento of a very special afternoon hopefully together with unforgettable memories.
It is testament to the huge commitment this school makes to celebrating our history. A huge well done to Mrs Stephenson, Mrs Shiels and all of the team of staff and helpers who made this very special day possible.
