Shaping Bright Futures Together

23 24 Hawthorn Wb 2nd October

We've had a wonderful, pet-tastic week in Hawthorn class! Following on from our 'I love pets' poems, we've taken the opportunity to welcome some special guests into the classroom. On Monday, we had a visit from Alfie Boe, the bunny! The children really enjoyed meeting him and finding out all about him. Tuesday's special visitor was Todrick the Tortoise - so tiny, yet so adorable! We all wanted to take him home! On Wednesday, we met Margo the puppy - equally cute and only 15 weeks old. On Thursday we met Nugget the guinea pig who thoroughly enjoyed the carrot that the children were feeding to him and finally on Friday we saw Jiggy the budgie!  What a great experience for the children.  Special thanks go to all their owners for kindly bringing in their precious pets and allowing us to share them for a little while.
We've now started a new topic in English based on the Nosy Crow version of Little Red Riding Hood. We've had a go at mapping out the story and will be using the text as inspiration for our writing during the coming weeks. In Phonics, the Year 1s have just started to learn phase 5, so the sound this week is wh.  If you see this sound whilst you are out and about, please point them out to the children.
In maths, Year 1s have been comparing and ordering numbers to 10 while Year 2s have had a big focus on number lines - they even made a super-sized number line to 100 on the playground!
In topic, we've moved on to the explorer Mary Kingsley, who journeyed to West Africa back in the days when women rarely had the opportunity to travel far afield. And in computing, the children practised logging on, then had a go at making pictures using paintz.app - a lovely, creative way of working on their mouse skills.
Finally in Science we were proper Scientists and wrote up last weeks investigation.  We discussed that the fun bit is the doing but,  writing up results is really important to record your results.  We were really proud of all the children for trying hard to combine their English writing skills and their Science skills in this lesson.
