Shaping Bright Futures Together

2526 Yr4 & Yr5 Residential

The Year 4 and 5’s this week spent the first three days on their residential at PGL in Liddington.

Everyone had a wonderful time, a snapshot is below of our time away from school.

We were met on arrival by our group leader Nova and got caught in the rain, so we ended up having our lunch in a lecture hall on site. Straight after lunch the children were put into three groups and headed off to their first activity. Activities included problem solving, whereby children solved some riddles as well as working as a team; the big swing, exactly as it sounds, and climbing, in which the children bravely took on the climbing wall getting as high as they could and then abseiling down. The whole group then took part in orienteering, to explore the site a little more and realise just how big it was. We were then able to go to our dormitories - children had a mere 10 minutes to decide which bunk they wanted before we were off to the dinner hall for a delicious dinner of fish fingers and chips or chicken and peppers. After dinner the children (and staff) enjoyed busting a few moves on the dance floor and singing their hearts out to some of their favourite songs in the silent disco.

The following morning, we got stuck into more activities following a huge cooked breakfast, including the trapeze where the children had to climb to the top of a telegraph pole and jump off a platform trying to grab a trapeze bar in front of them – not for the feint hearted! This was followed by a sensory trail, in which the children were blindfolded and found their way through a series of obstacles by communicating as a team. There were lots of shouts of ‘duck!’ and ‘tree roots!’ to be heard through the forest.

In the afternoon all the children went canoeing in two-man canoes. They played a series of games and some brave children jumped into the lake at the end!

After another lovely, cooked evening meal the children took part in a game show which involved a series of challenges to complete as a team and a short quiz.

Everyone managed a good night’s sleep on the second night and it was a struggle to wake some of the children up at 7am for breakfast on the last day. The final morning involved an archery battle between Mr Gibbons’ and Mrs Gibbons’ teams! No-one was safe!

Each group then completed their final activity to complete before a final lunch of Jacket potatoes and then it was time to go home.

All the children pushed themselves outside their comfort zone and it was lovely to see so much kindness between them all.

It was then back to business as usual in school on Thursday.
