Oak class have had a fantastic start to the new school year! In English we have been reading the story of ‘How the Whale Became’ by Ted Hughes. We have explored the characters of Whale-Wort, God and Mouse by acting them out and writing character descriptions. We have been picking out some of the conjunctions and how the author uses them to link his ideas.
We have started our topic of the Stone Age by trying to work out how long ago it was by using toilet roll as a timeline! We worked out if one square was 1000 years, you would need 3 rolls to get as far back as the prehistoric era!
Oak class have been lucky enough to have the first forest school this term and got the opportunity to try and complete some Stone Age challenges. They were tasked with making pigments from natural materials, creating a shelter with materials only found in the prehistoric era and lighting a fire using flint!
Our art unit this term is also linked to our Stone Age topic and this week we analysed some of the cave paintings from that time and created some amazing line drawings of animals that we would draw in a cave today.
In Maths we have been working on place value. Year 4 have been working with numbers to 10,000 and year 5 have been working with numbers to 100,000 and 1 million. We have been using number lines, place value charts and partitioning.
All children have been getting used to new classroom routines and settled in well to the start of the year.
