Shaping Bright Futures Together

Holly Class - Poles Apart

This week in Holly Class we have had a brilliant time exploring the world map! We read a story on Monday called Poles Apart, it is about a penguin family called the Pilchard-Browns, who get lost and find themselves at the North Pole. Here, they meet Mr White, a polar bear, who helps them get back home to the South Pole. After a careful look at the map we found the North and South Poles and tracked The Pilchard-Browns journey across the world. We have learnt about the animals that live in some of the hot and cold places and the Year 1 children found the Equator on their own maps, marking it on with a piece of wool so that they could remember where it is. We have also learnt about what a compass is, what they are for and we all had a go at finding North in our classroom.

In our maths lessons this week the Reception children have been investigating numbers between 5 and 10 and finding lots of different ways of representing these numbers. We have used blocks, pine cones, numerals, dice, dominoes, penguins and dinosaurs! Year 1 have been looking at the link between number bonds to 10 and number bonds to 20, this was tricky work and I was so impressed by how many of the children kept trying and trying until they achieved. Super problem solving Year 1!

Our literacy lessons this week have been all about writing facts. First we learnt lots of interesting information about whales and then we worked together to think about how we could share this with other people. The Reception children created fact sheets with some fabulous pictures, labels and even some sentences sharing their favourite facts. Year 1 have created a shared plan and then wrote a report with subheadings, taking care to work on including capital letters, full stops, finger spaces and question marks in the correct places. There was a lot to remember and the children were really proud of what they wrote!

Have a lovely, well deserved weekend Holly Class!
