Shaping Bright Futures Together

Willow Week Beginning 26th June

This week in Science, we've been learning about invertebrates. We looked at how we can classify them using their features and then went on an invertebrate hunt, using a classification key to help us identify what we had found. In Music, we've been listening to pieces from different periods of history.  We've also continued our rhythm work based around 'Clash and Bang'. We created our own clapping rhythms and worked on keeping them in time to a steady beat.
In English, we've started a new unit based on writing a balanced argument. We've had some interesting discussions about whether cars should be banned from city centres and also looked at a text all about whether we should have school uniforms, where we identified the key features of a balanced argument. We then focused on the use of fronted adverbials to help us organise our arguments and responded to the question 'should the Wonka factory be closed down?' As a class, we came up with a list of for and against points before using these to create our balanced arguments. We were careful to make sure that our arguments had balanced and fair points which were backed up with clear reasons and evidence too.
In Maths this week, we've been working on reading and representing data. The Year Threes have been collecting data to draw their own pictograms and bar graphs while the Year Fours have been reading and drawing their own line graphs. We have also started looking at reading and plotting coordinates. The children played a game of battleships to help them read coordinates accurately and we had plenty of success when sinking our enemy ships! We then used our knowledge of coordinates to plot 2d shapes onto a quadrant.
In PSHE, we have been exploring friendships in more depth and have identified signs of a positive friendship and situations where we need to be more reflective and consider behaviour. Our activity involved a selection of scenarios whereby we had to vote if they were positive, warning signs or negative signs in a friendship. We were really impressed with how well the children justified their thoughts and reflected on the behaviours in the scenarios.
