Ashton Under Hill First School

Shaping Bright Futures Together

23 24 Hawthorn Wb 4th March

It's been another eventful week in Hawthorn class!
In English, the children have continued their work on our current text, 'Look Inside Space', focusing on accurate sentence construction. They've also started to find out about missions to the moon alongside developing their knowledge about the International Space Station.
In maths, Year 1s are about to finish their 'Place Value within 50' unit, while Year 2s are coming to the end of 'Multiplication and Division'. Next, both year groups will be focusing on 'Length and Height'.
The children thought about ways in which they can help to reduce the damage caused by plastic in their topic lesson, while there was more sorting in computing.
On Wednesday the school had some visitors from Engage with China, a charity who aim to awaken Chinese curiosity and told us all about the different Chinese skills and their culture.  The children learned about the production of silk and where this comes from, how to count in Chinese both verbally and with their right hand, how to write the Chinese character for dragon and how to eat with chopsticks!  We had a great time but were glad that we could eat with a knife and fork!

Linking Science and our English work, the children had the opportunity to take part in a live lesson from the STEM hub at Canterbury Christ Church University where we learned all about the new Artemis mission to the moon and how this is a practise for when we send a manned mission to Mars.  The session was interactive and the children used the ipads to vote for different parts of the mission.  The children loved it, especially Luna the space dog!
