Shaping Bright Futures Together

2324 Holly Class week beginning 4th March

What a lovely but busy week we have had in Holly Class!

On Wednesday we had some visitors in school who came to teach us all about China. We spent the morning doing different activities in the hall, finding out about where China is, the weather and landscape, the language spoken there and how food is eaten. The children were involved in telling the story of how silk was discovered and looked at some real silk moth cocoons, they learnt a song to sing 1 - 7 in Mandarin, learnt how to write 'dragon' and had a go at using chopsticks!

On Friday we celebrated World Book Day. The children had a wonderful day dressed as their favourite book characters and celebrating all things reading! We had a whole school theme this year and all of the classes spent some time looking at the story 'The Day the Crayons Quit'. The Holly class children loved spotting the crayons the grown ups in school were dressed up as while we read the book and found out about why some of the crayons were so grumpy! Each of the children made their own little book where they used crayons to colour in things that they don't usually get to do, we had a crayon disco and also enjoyed swapping teachers for story time and shared reading time in house groups.

Amongst all of this we somehow managed to squeeze in some super learning in maths. Year one have been learning to count forwards and back in tens as well as count bigger numbers by grouping into tens and then counting on in ones. The Reception children have been learning about who to split a whole number into two parts and experimenting with how bigger numbers can be split in different ways.

In literacy we have been working on asking and writing questions and we have learnt the story of Wangari Maathai who made a huge difference planting trees in Kenya. This also supported our Geography work as the Year 1 children looked at some of the geographical features and made comparisons with the UK.

The children have also been busy crafting and making this week, make sure you check your child's bag for a little something for Mothers Day on Sunday.
