Ashton Under Hill First School

Shaping Bright Futures Together

Willow - WB 19.09.2022

We had a successful meet the teachers session on Wednesday this week. We were able to talk about classroom routines, what we are covering in lessons and how you can help at home. Please take a look at our class page on the school website for more information.

As part of our writing lessons this week, the children have been able to retell the story of 'Cinderella of the Nile' from a different character's perspective. The class took part in a drama session to help them re-enact the key parts of the story. We discussed how the main character might have felt during the beginning, middle and end and we used emotive language in our writing. The children have written some excellent stories and should be very proud of themselves. This is our final week learning about place value in maths. We will begin addition and subtraction next week. The children in Year 4 have been learning about Roman Numerals.

In our PSHE lesson the children learned about how important it is to help others and we discussed how characters in the story 'Cinderella of the Nile' help Rhodopis on her journey.

As part of our Topic lesson this week, we have been exploring the location of Egypt using world, continent and country maps. The children completed a relay activity where we chalked the map of Egypt onto the playground, focusing on the location of neighbouring countries, surrounding oceans and key features. The children worked hard to recreate the shape of the map and locate the key countries accurately.  We then used our knowledge  of the location of Egypt to produce some travel brochure pages which we will display on our class Topic board.

In Computing, the children have been creating times tables games using Scratch. The Year 3 children have learnt how to create a question with a forever loop to generate a response. Our Year 4 children have taken an additional step by adding variables to generate random times tables questions. They have all worked really carefully to ensure their algorithms work successfully.

It has been a busy week in Willow class and the children have worked hard. We look forward to finding more out about Ancient Egypt next week.
