Shaping Bright Futures Together

2425 Holly Class week beginning 7th July

It's been a super week in Holly class with the children working really hard finishing off lots of learning and different projects as we approach the end of term.

On Monday, it was the Teddy Bear's picnic for the new Reception children and so the Holly class children prepared the picnic for them. They made sandwiches, fruit kebabs and savoury muffins which were all delicious and went down a treat. Everyone enjoyed a picnic during the afternoon and it made the new starters feel very welcome. Well done Holly class children!

In our maths lessons this week, Year 1 have been learning about arrays and doubles. They have enjoyed some practical work using ice cube trays and muffin tins to visualise their maths and then really impressed us with how they have applied their knowledge to their written work. The Reception children have been playing barrier games to practise their positional language and working on creating their own pattern rules.

The children have done some brilliant writing during our Drawing Club sessions this week. It is so wonderful to see everyone writing so confidently. We have written a recount of a particularly exciting part of our story, The Sea of Dreams, where the little boy falls out of the boat and meets some sea creatures as well as some fact sheets about the sea creatures he meets. The children have also started planning their own story using a story map, if you were able to come to open classroom hopefully you enjoyed hearing a little bit more about these.

We all took part in a science experiment this week testing the bendiness of different materials. The children used plastic, wood, metal and cardboard and balanced weights on the end to see which one was the most bendy. Ask your children about the results, hopefully they can tell you about what they found out!

We have also enjoyed lots of Geography work this week. We have been comparing some of the coastal settlements we've been learning about with cities as well as reading the Katie Morag stories and using these to help us make comparisons between an island and a mainland. The children were particularly thrilled to find out that Katie Morag's island is based on a real Scottish island, The Isle of Coll and enjoyed learning a bit more about it.
