Shaping Bright Futures Together

2526 Acorn and Holly week beginning 6th October

What a brilliant few weeks of learning we have had in Acorn and Holly class!

We really enjoyed joining with the rest of school to celebrate harvest a few weeks ago. Thank you to everyone who was able to join us for the Friday Harvest Festival assembly, I think you will agree that the children were amazing, sharing their poem and joining in with the singing with such confidence! We had spent the week learning about why we celebrate the harvest and where lots of our food come from. The Little Red Hen was the story that led our learning and the children found out about how the wheat is planted, grows, is harvested and then can be made into flour. They then successfully made and ate their very own bread!

Last week the story Owl Babies led our learning and we continue to explore and learn about the 'deep, dark woods'. The children have loved reading and retelling this story of the baby owls waiting for their Mummy and had some brilliant, imaginative ideas at Drawing Club about where Mummy Owl might be and how the babies could stay safe together while they waited for her. Everyone had a go at making their own pine cone owl, practising their fine motor skills to push all of the cotton wool into the little pine cone gaps, as well as working in teams to build a nest for the owls in the garage space of our classroom. Do have a look at the photos to see some expert nest builders!

This week we have enjoyed sharing the beautiful autumn story, Leaf Man. It has prompted the children to find out all about the trees that give our classes in school their names; Acorn, Holly, Hawthorn, Willow and Oak. They have explored each one in turn through identification games at forest school, some beautiful drawings and paintings of hawthorn and hawthorn fairies (often with berries for hats!) and learning how willow can be soaked to make it all bendy and then making their own willow crowns. It has been lovely to see so much curiosity and fascination for the beautiful natural word around us.

The children have been working really hard with their maths learning. The Holly children have been working on subitising in their mastering number sessions and have enjoyed meeting number blocks 1 - 4 and delving deeper into lots of different representations of these numbers. They have also been learning about mass and capacity this week; exploring how to use the balance scales. The Acorn children have been learning about exploring and building with different shapes. They have been thinking about selecting shapes for a particular purpose and describing them, last week they worked as a team to build a very impressive rocket inspired by 'Whatever Next'. You will find it in the photos...
