Shaping Bright Futures Together

Oak Class Week 4

Another busy week has whizzed past, and that means another week closer to the big performance!! Oak class are working exceedingly hard to perform without their scripts and remember their positions on stage when acting. Next week we will be moving onto the stage and use more of the props that we are busy gathering or making (we have a superb props department aka Mrs Clayton). The letter about costumes has gone out today, and the clothes rail is up ready to be filled. You will soon be able to access tickets for the two performances, watch out for the letter in bags too.

In Science this week, we have continued our studies on rocks and have been learning about how rocks change over time. We set up a mini experiment to observe the power of water and erosion on rocks by shaking pebbles in a container filled with water. We went onto the playground and gave them a really good shake to observe the fragments and sediment that was at the bottom of the containers. There was quite alot to see in some of the examples and this clearly illustrated erosion to the Class. We followed this up by learning about how caves are formed from a range of different natural processes.

In RE we are looking at the importance of the Torah to Judasim. We looked at one of the most common prayers and its meaning last week and why Jewish people have special plaques, called Mezuza's on their door posts. This week we developed the theme and learnt about Teffelin, small leather boxes that Jewish people wear during prayer.

We are merging our learning about the Maya into both Topic and Writing lessons, as our new text is a non-fiction book about Ancient Mayan life. We are currently researching the content for an explanation text, focusing on the differences in daily life between rich and poor Mayans. The children have already got plenty of facts and will begin to look at how information text is presented and structured to develop their writing skills.

In our daily Guided Reading sessions this week we have looked at a wide range of texts from a nonsense poem by Spike Milligan (In The Bumbly Boo), to lyrics from a song by David Guetta and a non fiction text about children who have changed the world. The particular example was about Mohamad Al Jounde, a Syrian refugee who set up a school in his refugee camp and won an international award protecting children's rights. We also used a picture of a Logo character on a car wheel, to improve our prediction and inference skills.

Dance is the focus for PE lessons, and the class have been doing some impressive work, collaberating in groups to create, improve and perform their dances. Check the gallery for examples of their work. We also had our last swimming session on Thursday, the children have had a great time on their weekly trip to the leisure centre and all have developed their proficiency in this very important life skill. We will go back to PE lessons on Thursdays.

Next Friday we will be taking part, along with the rest of the school, in Number Day, which is run by the charity NSPCC. The children will be asked to 'Dress up for Digits' wearing clothing with numbers on or as an actual digit! Get your thinking caps on as there will be house points awarded for the most inventive outfits!! After school there will also be a cake sale to raise funds for the charity. Any donations of cakes will be gratefully received.

An update to previous blogs with a pupil in our class doing things for charity:  Esme successfully donated her lovely locks last weekend, she raised over £250.00. A very impressive achievement. What a fabulous role model she is, representing all the things our school stands for in this selfless act.
