Willow wb 09.02.26
Willow Class have been busy exploring the fascinating world of the Ancient Islamic Civilisations. As part of this topic, we have been learning all about trade and the Silk Road — why it was so important and the different goods that were transported along its vast network of routes. We discovered how items such as silk, spices, precious metals and ceramics travelled across continents, connecting people, cultures and ideas.
As part of our Design and Technology work, we have designed and created our own clay items inspired by the artefacts traded during this period. We are looking forward to sharing these at our own ‘Ancient Islamic Market’ after half term!
In Science we explored conductors and insulators. The children investigated different materials to see whether they allow electricity to pass through. We learned that metals are usually good conductors, while materials like plastic, rubber and wood are insulators. The class did a great job making predictions and explaining their results like real scientists.
In Maths, the children have been working hard to secure their understanding of written methods for multiplication and division. This week, we have been focusing on using flexible partitioning and part–part–whole models to divide 2- and 3-digit numbers. Alongside this, we have continued to develop our mental maths skills and have been practising our times tables to build speed and confidence.
In English, we have been enjoying our class text The Iron Man by Ted Hughes. The children used the story to help them learn about adverbials. We practised adding adverbials to our sentences to describe how, when and where things happen. The children created some brilliant sentences to make their writing more exciting and detailed.
We hope that everyone has a lovely half term break and we are looking forward to a new topic in the next half term which will be Geography based. Our Year 3 children have also got the residential trip to look forward to!
