Shaping Bright Futures Together

Holly class - w/b 23rd January 2023

We are continuing our journey around the world, and this week, the Holly class aeroplane has brought us back to London. With the help of a special delivery from Paddington bear, we learnt about the different landmarks and features of London. The children have been busy telling Pog the penguin all about it, and he has decided that it still isn't quite the right place for him to live. In their Geography lesson, the Year 1 children have been learning about the difference between human and physical features of Geography, they did a brilliant job of sorting geographical features into these 2 categories, including some features we had learnt about from London.

In our literacy lessons, we have continued with our work on non fiction writing. Each of the children have now finished their fact page about penguins to go with Pog on his onward journey. We have spent the rest of the week becoming polar bear experts and the children are preparing to create their own, independent book about polar bears to practise the skills we have been working on.

In phonics this week, the year 1 children have been continuing to consolidate the phase 5 phonemes we now know and we have had a real focus on spotting these in words they are reading, as well as using them to spell words. The reception children have learnt 3 new phonemes this week; j, v and w. See if you can spot any of these when you are reading at home!

In maths this week, Year 1 have been using ordering, comparing and estimating with numbers up to 20. You will see them in the photos working hard on their estimating skills using numberlines on whiteboards. The Reception children have been applying what they have leant about part part whole models to our numberblock friends, splitting them down into parts and building them back up to a whole again.

As part of our science learning, we have also been finding out about habitats and what different animals need to survive and live happily in different places. The children were brilliant scientists when they were challenged to think of their own animals and talk about the habitats they lived in. It was lovely to see the children asking lots of questions and helping each other out with their learning.

Have a lovely weekend everyone, I wonder where we will be visiting on the Holly class plane next week...!
