Shaping Bright Futures Together

Oak Week Beginning 7th July 2025

Our penultimate week of this year has been great - lots going on to keep us all on our toes!

The Year 5 Leavers party was a great success, the weather was perfect, the children were amazing and they had some good old fashioned fun that, in the main they made for themselves. We started off with rounders, moved onto ping pong, singing and a boogie. After this there was a mixture of football, limbo, parachute games, tug of war, egg and spoon and 3 three legged races with a bit of Twister and Jenga thrown in. We had our picnic lunch and battled with the wasps and then cut the amazing leavers cake with a surprise Smarties fountain in side!! Very impressive. After lunch, the children were ready to cool off with some water balloon catch which very quickly turned into a water fight and the water pistols came out too!! The children were in their element and were very soggy. After drying off and some chill out time, the highlight of the afternoon was a visit from the ice cream van. They were ecstatic and couldn't wait to get theirs!! It was a real privilege to spend the day with the wonderful Year 5's, they were a complete joy and made the day as brilliant as it was because of their enthusiasm and ability to have fun.

The rest of the week was a little quieter, but not by much!! We have been finishing off all the end of year assessments and immersing ourselves in the next of our topic questions What was it like to live in London during the Blitz? We looked at primary sources of evidence in the shape of photographs which were taken at the time and used our history detective skills to work out what was happening and what it would be like to live through these dangerous times. Whilst other children were at the Big Sing, we took part in a science experiment to test the best materials to use as blackout material. Using a box with a viewing hole to shine a torch through, they wrapped the box in different materials and observed how much light could be seen shining through. It was very successful and the children were able to make clear decisions about which was the best. This activity was followed by looking at propaganda posters which the government used to get civilians to comply with different requests. In the afternoon we all created some Blitz paintings using a sillouetted skyline in front of a burning sky. They looked really effective with the contrasts of colours.
