Ashton Under Hill First School

Shaping Bright Futures Together

Week Beginning 5th September 2022

It has been wonderful to have everyone back in class this week, looking very smart in their uniforms and eager to get on with their learning. There were lots of lovely shiny new shoes on the playground on Tuesday! We have also got something new and shiny in the Oak classroom too - a brand new interactive board. It is AMAZING and will really help to enhance the quality of lessons and in turn the children's learning. We are all very excited about using it.

All the children have been allocated their special jobs which allow the Year 5's to have extra responsibilities across the whole school. They were involved in the selection process to let us know their preferences for the jobs on offer. In assembly on Thursday they explained to the rest of the school what role they have got and are wearing the special badges they have been given with pride.

Our learning is already underway and we have made a great start with our place value learning in maths, looking at Roman numerals and numbers to 1,000,000. We have read the book which is inspiring our writing for the start of this half term (Cinderella of The Nile) and started to deconstruct the story which will ultimately help us to write a similar story with a clear and well organised structure.

Mrs Thompson started off our learning about Ancient Egypt by studying their number system and brightening up our walls with some beautiful cartouches, that display the children's name using hieroglyphics.

In art we have produced some self portraits and used a range of media to create some very striking and colourful art work.

The main highlight of the week has been meeting up with the new Reception children and starting our role as Buddies. It has been lovely to see the Year 5's take on this responsibility with such care, excitement and maturity, they are already doing a fabulous job of making our newest pupils feel happy and welcome. There will be lots more opportunities to meet up over the next few weeks.

Look out for the Oak Autumn Term Welcome Letter in your inbox and on the website. Also expect a message from the office about the 'Meet The Teacher' meeting, Oak's will be on Thursday 15th September at 2.30pm. It will be lovely to see you, but if you can't make it, all the information will be put onto the Oak Class page on the website. Plus swimming will start for Oak on Thursday 22nd September, further details will be sent home.
