22nd January – Night and day in Acorn Class
Our theme for the week has been Night and Day and we have enjoyed some delightful stories being read by some lovely ‘guest readers’ (so a big ‘thankyou’ to Mrs Westall and Mr Archer for their help with this.)
We have been working hard with our phonics every day and the reception children are getting better at blending and sounding out words and spelling them for themselves, whilst our preschoolers have enjoyed lots of nursery rhymes and songs . Many of us also went on a sound hunt earlier in the week to find sounds to represent the noises in the story ‘Peace at Last’ and some of us made ‘silly sound soup’.
In maths we have been learning about mass and capacity and have done lots of practical measuring. We have also followed recipes to make saltdough or playdough and many of us have used this to make moon and star mobiles . We even had one edible mobile made of biscuit dough!
We have looked at the picture of ‘The starry night’ by Vincent Van Gogh and many of the children have had a go at creating their own interpretation of this.
We’ve done some lovely creative writing about night time and stars and we have discovered lots of scientific facts about the stars, the sun and the moon.
