24th January – A visit to the vet
Mrs Archer came to talk to us about her work as a vet. We were really fascinated and we all listened very well. Murphy the dog came for an examination and we all watched carefully as Murphy was examined. Mrs Archer looked at his eyes, ears, teeth and then she checked his legs were bending properly. She felt his tummy to make sure that nothing was stuck in his intestines and she used her stethoscope to listen to his heart beat. Finally Mrs Archer explained how she would take his temperature – but Murphy decided he didn’t want to stand still for that!
After this we looked at some x rays which Mrs Archer had taken of some of her patients and we tried to work out what sort of animal we were looking at. That was quite tricky as there were x rays of different parts of a cat, a dog and a chicken.
Later we all had a listen to one another’s heartbeat using the stethoscope and we designed and set up our own role play vet surgery which is proving very popular.
