23 Holly Class W/B 17th April 2023

What a fun first week back!

This week Holly Class have started their brand-new topic ‘Castles and Turrets’ and the role play area has been transformed into a castle. The children have learnt about what a castle is and how they were built. The reception children painted a picture of a castle and Year 1 labelled their own pictures including the materials that they were made from. We are very excited to continue our castle adventures next week!

In phonics, reception have revisited the phonemes ‘i, n, e, d and g’. They have written these individually as well as within words. As always, we have practiced lots of our tricky words! Year 1 have revisited the phonemes ‘ea, oy, ew, au and ai’. They have written these individually and within sentences, as well as practising lots of tricky and alien words!

In literacy, Holly Class have learnt all about the traditional tale ‘Goldilocks and the Three Bears’ and have engaged in lots of activities to help them remember the story. Reception have sequenced the story pictures and explored the story telling sack. They remembered it very well! Year 1 have sequenced the story as a group, made drawings to retell the story and practised their punctuation within sentences. In small groups, Holly Class even became the characters and acted out the story.

In maths, reception have been learning about the composition of numbers to 10 using 2 parts. We found that for numbers greater than 5 it is easiest to show the number on our fingers as ‘5 and a bit’. They have also been practising their number formation using whiteboards, recognition using the number car tracks and creating their own track games outside with the chalk and big dice! Year 1 have been counting in 2’s, 5’s and 10’s using connecting blocks and counters. They have also used number grids to identify patterns.

In science this week Holly Class have been introduced to their new topic all about everyday materials. They learnt about the difference between a material and an object and discussed lots of different examples. We then had a big game of ‘material i-spy’ to practice what we had learnt.

Finally, we had a lovely time in forest school learning all about caterpillars, including now they transform into butterflies. We collected leaves to decorate our own caterpillars and were even introduced to our very own class caterpillars! We can’t wait to see them grow over the next few weeks.

Have an amazing weekend everyone!
