Ashton Under Hill First School

Shaping Bright Futures Together

Holly Class W/B 20th November 2023

What a fun week it has been! This week the children have learnt all about Amelia Earhart. Year 1 sequenced her life through pictures and reception made their own passports and boarding passes!

In phonics this week, year 1 have learnt digraphs ‘ir’ and ‘er’ as well as some spelling rules and tricky words. Reception have learnt the phonemes ‘w’ ‘x’ and ‘y’ and used these within words.

In maths this week, year 1 have continued to practice solving addition and subtraction sentences, using numicon, blocks and rekenreks to support them. Reception have continued to learn about the composition of numbers 3, 4 and 5 and how they can be split into 2 parts. They created their own ‘stampolines’ using paint to represent the numbers 3, 4 and 5.

In English this week, Year 1 have practiced using the conjunction ‘and’ to extend and join sentences. They also created a class story map to sequence the adventures of ‘Grog the Naughty Frog’. This will form the basis of their independent write next week! Reception have practiced their letter formation and writing topic- based words using their phonics knowledge.

The children also had a lovely time at forest school with Mrs Shiels on Friday, what a treat for our last session of the term.

Our practice of the nativity is well under way! The children have loved singing the songs and practicing their roles. We have a busy few weeks ahead!

Have a lovely weekend everyone, and enjoy our lovely photos from the week.
