Shaping Bright Futures Together

Oak Week Beginning 2nd October 2023

We have been focussing on rounding this week in our Maths lessons and have been using number lines and rhymes to help us to practise our skills. To prove how well we can round, we have finished the week with some rounding games which needed an element of luck, depending on what number was on the dice when it rolled and some strategy. Our keen sense of competition also came into play. Having fun with maths helps to consolidate our learning and hopefully help us to retain our knowledge!

In English we have been studying the grammar in our story The Princess' Blankets to learn how to use semi colons and how to vary the way we start our sentences. To do this we retold the story of the Hare and the Tortoise and looked at how the hero and heroine felt at the end of the book. Our independent writing at the end of the week showed we have made good progress with these skills. We have also created four new blankets for the Princess to warm her up, improving on the ideas the Stranger had in the story. We drew images that represented: a desert, a volcano, a summer meadow and finally the sun and the sky. After this, we attached the images to a blanket and created a bed in the classroom - no snoozing allowed though!! At the end of the day on Friday, parents were invited into our class to look at our English work so we can share what we have been up to.

In Science we worked in small groups to answer a big question together - it was 'Why do animals eat different things?' They had to research their answers by working their way through several activities and then decided on their conclusions. It really made them think and built on their collaborative learning skills. All the children managed to use the key vocabulary in their conclusions and had to comment on how well they had worked together. It was a very successful afternoon's work!
