Shaping Bright Futures Together

Oak Week Beginning 9th October 2023

We have been very busy writing stories this week as our traditional tales study comes to its climax. The children have been reworking The Princess's Blankets story, using the same structure, but changing the details. After planning out our ideas, we talked through the plot and acted out sections of the story to ensure we knew it inside out before writing. They have changed the ideas from a Princess who can't get warm, to boys who can't sleep, stop hiccuping or smile and girls who are too hot, refuse to eat vegetables and can't stop sneezing. I can't wait to read them when they are finished, it has been really successful topic and sparked the children's imagination.

Our new topic in Maths is addition and subtraction and we have been showing some excellent skills when exchanging and regrouping. We are working very hard to improve our explanation skills, using precise vocabulary and communicating clearly. They have been trying to explain why some calculations are wrong and whether statements are true or false. This is a tricky skill and needs lots of practise to get it right.

In Music we have been very busy learning some new skills on the recorder. We have been learning the notes B A and G and that notes have different lengths depending on whether they are quavers, crotchets, or minims. The children are starting to recognise different symbols such as repeat and rest in order to follow a simple score. We gave this weeks Family Assembly a brief performance of our latest song, The Eye of The Tiger which the children really enjoyed learning and performing.

We had great fun in Science this week with Willow Class when we made skeletons out of different shaped pasta as part of our learning into the function and structure of the skeleton. The children worked in pairs, one from each class, and had to use a variety of pasta shapes to recreate the different bones as accurately as they could.  After waiting for it to dry, the children then labelled their diagrams and evaluated how accurate they had been. They had lots of fun, made lots of mess, got very sticky, but in the process learnt a huge amount about the structure of our skeletons.

With two more weeks to go, we still have plenty to do and have some exciting events to take part in, including a skipping workshop, football tournaments and a very special Eco day run by Mrs Shiels.
