Shaping Bright Futures Together

Willow wb 02.10.2023

Willow class had their first visit to Forest School this week and it was a lovely opportunity to show our new pupils around the site as well as enjoy spending time as a class out in nature. We were extremely lucky with the lovely weather and had a fantastic time. Some of the children were thinking about their knowledge of the Stone Age and were attempting to make nettle soup and tea whilst others were building structures and working really well in their groups.

In Science we investigated animal skeletons. We learnt about vertebrates and invertebrates and looked at x-ray images of different animals to find out more about how their skeletons differ. In Music, we used the chime bars and xylophones to learn an accompanying part to our song. We did really well with this, working on playing the notes accurately and keeping in time with the music.

Our Maths lessons have been focused on applying our mental maths skills to add and subtract 1s and 10s this week. On Thursday we played 'popcorn maths' where we had to randomly select our questions and present our thoughts and working out on group posters. We worked hard to include examples of calculations to prove our explanations. In our Reading lesson we looked at the information text 'All about snakes' and focused on retrieving key facts from the text. We had to look closely for the key vocabulary before reading around the sentences to help us respond to quiz questions.

In PSHE we completed a group challenge called the 'Tangram Challenge' which involved working in teams to make as many different pictures as we possibly could. The focus of the lesson was to reflect on our own role when working in a team and whether we contribute positively, lead the task or sit back and allow others to complete the activity. We discussed the meaning of cooperation and the importance of actively taking on a role within the group. The children were great at reflecting on their own roles and went back to repeat the task, taking on their own reflections.
