Shaping Bright Futures Together

25 Oak Week Beginning 12th May

This week was a first for us as we had a maypole workshop. It was great fun and, as we have our own maypole, we could all take part at the same time. We learnt some new dances which will help us in our club and to get ready for our Open Gardens performance.

In Guided Reading we have been using mystery and suspense stories which has allowed us to use our detective skills and become super sleuths!! We have solved the Mystery of the Missing Painting  and The Curious Case of the Stolen Show, putting our inference skills to good use so that we could assess the evidence and analyse the suspect's alibis.

As part of our Science, the children have been learning about friction and how it is useful in everyday life. We need friction to create a good grip between the soles of our shoes and the ground, or between our car tyres and the road. At other times, friction can be something we want to reduce. Oil or lubricants are added to door hinges or the gears of our bicycles to reduce friction and make them move more easily. The children made a prediction to see what happens when you pick up a jelly cube covered in oil compared to a jelly cube without. The children explained what happened using their knowledge of friction.

Our Topic lesson this week was about the largest cities in the world and how to locate them. We used the atlases to find as many capital cities as we could in a timed session and then investigated a world city of their own choice. We will be trying to learn the largest city on each continent over the next few weeks and keep these facts stored in our memories.

In PSHE we have been focussing on keeping safe. We have revised some e-safety rules and moved onto keeping ourselves safe in the sun. The children made some posters to warn others of the dangers of the sun and other activities we may be involved in during the summer time.
