Ashton Under Hill First School

Shaping Bright Futures Together

Oak Week Beginning 30th June 2025

We have had a very hot week but still managed to get lots done.

We started our week, in maths, looking at position and direction, recalling the grid reference skills we used in geography lessons to use coordinates. The children had remembered the script "along the corridor and up the stairs", to remind them that they need to read the X axis before the Y axis. This was a great help and they were able to use coordinates with ease. Later on in the week, we moved onto translating shapes, moving them into different positions on an axis.

In our writing lessons, we are still linking it to our topic study of Britain in the 1940's. We have written a balanced argument to discuss the issue of evacuation of children. The pupils have been able to use their historical understanding and apply it to their writing. Using some key phrases they have been able to put forward both sides of the argument, for and against evacuation and use lots of examples to back up their points.

Sports day was a fantastic event and the Year 5's thoroughly enjoyed their last chance to take part in an Ashton sports event. The whole day was filled with support and encouragement for each other and their respective house teams; it was so lovely to see all our school values represented throughout the event. Thank you to all the parents who were able to attend, your presence in creating a crowd for the children to perform to makes all the difference.

Only two more weeks to go and lots of fun to squeeze in.
