Ashton Under Hill First School

Shaping Bright Futures Together

25 26 Hawthorn 13th February

Well, we have finally made it to the end of another half term.  The children have been working very hard to get everything completed before we break up for a week on Friday.

In English, the children wrote their own version of "Fatou, Fetch the Water" where they tried to include all the skills we have been practising over the last 3 weeks.  They used adverbs, expanded noun phrases and the correct story structure to tell their stories about a child going to collect something in school but being constantly interrupted.  We had some super stories and we are very proud of the children for all the effort they put in.

In maths, the year 1 children have just moved on to adding and subtraction to 20 and the year 2s have been working on money, using different coins and notes to make different amounts.

In topic, we have been completing this half terms topic on Oceans and there has been lots of mapwork, learning about features of islands, naming the 5 oceans on Earth and thinking about compasses and directions.

In Science, we have been studying plants.  The children have learned about features of different plants including garden and wild plants where we played memory pairs to find common plants .  Despite the poor weather we looked outside to see the difference between evergreen and deciduous trees and used a key to identify different trees - it was quite tricky.

In music, we have been looking at the different sounds our voices and instruments make.  We listened to a poem called "Sounds" and the children had to use percussion instruments to match words like boom, scratch, rustle etc.  It was great fun and very loud.

Finally, you will see from the photographs that the children have been using their artistic skills to cut and shape clay to make African masks and then after they dried they were able to paint and decorate them.  We hope you agree, they did a super job!
