25Oak Week Beginning 19th May
The final week of this half term has been fun filled! We have had 3 different enrichment opportunities this week and they have all been great learning opportunities.
We finished our Computing project this week and followed our own trails around the school grounds using the Micro:Bits to direct us from one place to another. The children programmed the routes and tested out their friend's instruction following skills.
The whole week has been Ashton's very own Science Week and we've all gone Science mad!! On Thursday and Friday afternoon we immersed ourselves in a WOW Science event where the children took part and observed some exciting experiments that we do not get chance to do during our curriculum lessons. They observed sugar worms and elephants toothpaste created and had a go at writing in invisible ink, testing the density of different liquids and making travelling rainbows. The children were very engaged and had a great experience. We also took part in a whole school paper aeroplane experiment. Each child made their own plane, tested and modified it to try to get it to fly the furthest. It was extremely good fun and they thoroughly enjoyed the challenge. The top planes earned lots of house points!
During Wednesday afternoon. we took part in an Eco experience which centred around plastic waste. Mrs Shiels explained all the causes of plastic waste and we saw the impact it is having on our environment and the animals that live in it. She gave us lots of practical ideas to reduce, reuse and recycle and how we can address this issue everyday of lives. We played a great game where the whole school played 'Can we recycle this type of paper?' which raised awareness about which types of paper we can and cannot recycle.
Year 5 took part in their first transition event when staff from the middle school to share with them what it is like to be a pupil at BHA. They asked some really good questions and went away reassured about their next move.
