Shaping Bright Futures Together

Oak: Bikes, Rounders and Trampolines.....

This week has been action packed for the Year 5 children in Oak. It started on Monday with their final Bikeability session where they went out into the community to navigate a selection of the road junctions. All the children impressed the instructors and the weather was much kinder, if a bit hot, for them all too.

For Year 5 on Tuesday, it was a cluster rounders tournament on the village playing fields. We played a mini tournament with two other schools, Sedgeberrow and Cropthorne. It was great fun, there was some great batting and fielding from our teams, the throwing and catching skills were fabulous!! The best part was watching our pupils working together to score points and some victory over the other teams. We had mixed success in terms of wins, but in our eyes they won for their amazing effort and improvement of their skills.

On Wednesday, after our final maths assessment was completed, we had a debate about people's beliefs in God. We used our knowledge gained from this RE topic and put all our thoughts together to discuss how different people view their belief in a God. It was very enlightening and the children made some very well thought out points and it really made us think. In the afternoon, school Governor Mr Archer kindly came to talk to us about his beliefs and how they help other people deal with every day life.

Thursday was the Leavers Treat day - again action packed!! We took the whole class to the playing fields for a morning of rounders, which was extremely pleasant in the lovely shade and cool breeze, much cooler than school!! We had lots of fun, many rounders were scored and spectacular catches taken. It was great team work again. The Year 5 children stayed to have a lovely picnic lunch and then it was time to get changed and ready to go to the Funky Warehouse in Cheltenham for their big treat of the day. (They chose the venue for themselves after much debate and deliberation.) They had a great time if the measure of pleasure was taken from how red in the face they were!!! They had the run of the place for much of the time so were able to use all the trampolines, soft play and Ninja Warrior equipment. It was great fun!!

On Friday all of Oak and Willow got together for a topic day, focussing on how plastic waste in the ocean affects the Maldives. They got into mixed class groups and produced a script based around a series of key questions to investigate the issue. Their research culminated in a 'TV News broadcast' style presentation using 'green screen' technology in order to explain what they had found out. All I can say is that some news broadcasters should be quaking in their boots as we have some excellent broadcast journalists in our midst!!

The heat has played a large factor in our days in school this week and the week to come will be no different. Please ensure your child brings in a water bottle and sun hat and sun cream applied.

I can't quite believe the year is almost over now, 4 more get up's until school's out for the summer - time flies when you are having fun!  Mrs T.
