Shaping Bright Futures Together

Oak Week Beginning 2nd June 2025

Here we are at the start of the last half-term, this year has whizzed by and we have got lots to cram into the next few weeks.

In maths we have been looking at two different areas; Year 4 are continuing to develop their problem solving skills using money and Year 5 have been learning about negative numbers. Both of these areas have clear links to every day life so it gives the children a real purpose for learning about these two areas of maths.

The Ice Bear book by Jackie Morris is providing us with the inspiration for our writing lessons. We have been learning about how to use possessive apostrophes to improve our SPAG accuracy and looking at how words in a description can be classed as either nouns or adjectives depending on the context. We then applied both of these skills into a piece of writing which described the setting and characters that appeared in the story. The children used some of their learning from last term as they included great examples of figurative language.

We have continued to increase our locational knowledge in Topic lessons by learning about some of the key physical features in each continent. We started by looking at the largest mountain ranges and their highest peaks. The children created a very exciting true or false quiz between the two year groups they were extremely competitive even though it ended up as a draw.

This week in music, the children had the exciting challenge to compose a piece of music based on a dramatic moment from the story ‘The Iron Man’ by Ted Hughes. The scene we focused on was when the Iron Man tumbled from the cliff and crashed to the ground, breaking into pieces. The children worked together in small groups to create their own musical interpretations of this scene. Their goal was to use music to tell the story relying on dynamics (how loud or soft the music is) and tempo (the speed of the music) to create drama. Each group planned their piece carefully, thinking about how to build suspense as the Iron Man teeters on the edge, the sudden shock of the fall, and the scattered, eerie quiet after he hits the ground. They experimented with different instruments, sounds, and rhythms to bring their ideas to life. It was amazing to see how each group brought the story to life in their own unique way.

On Thursday afternoon, we had a very busy afternoon creating creatures out of recycled plastics to link in with last terms eco day and provide entries for the Open Gardens competition. We planned, made and evaluated our creatures using lots of our Design and Technology skills to find effective ways to shape the plastic, attach different parts together and use the available materials to recreate a recognisable animal. It was chaotic and messy but the overall results were amazing - it was worth all the tidying up!!  See the gallery for photos.

Finally, the Year 5's received their leavers hoodies this week. They will be wearing these for the rest of the year, they are very pleased with them and are very excited to be able to wear them every day! They all look so smart :)
