This half term, Willow class have been learning about Ancient Islamic Civilisations. We began by finding out where these civilisations were located and how they link with Ancient Egypt through trade, learning and shared ideas. We have started to explore why it is important to learn about these civilisations, discovering their amazing contributions to science, medicine and trade that still influence our lives today. Our next step will be to look more closely at the cities of Baghdad, London and Cairo. The children will compare these cities to see how location, trade and ideas helped them grow and develop over time. Our photos this week are of our visit to Forest School where we made links with our topic by making ancient Islamic bread and using herbs and spices to create recipes to heal common illnesses.
This week in science, our classroom was buzzing with excitement as we began learning all about electricity! The children explored where electricity comes from and how we use it in our everyday lives. We started by identifying different sources of electricity and sorting appliances into two groups: mains-powered and battery-powered. We also had a thoughtful discussion about what life would be like without electricity. The children shared some brilliant ideas! They realised we wouldn’t have lights, TVs, fridges, phones, or even traffic lights. Many agreed that everyday life would be much harder and very different without electrical power. Next week, we will take our learning even further by investigating simple circuits.
In writing lessons, we have been exploring non-fiction texts using the book Penguins by Penelope Arlon. The children have been learning how to structure paragraphs and make sure all of their information links to a key theme. We have also continued to develop our use of subordinating conjunctions to help extend and improve our sentences. In Maths, the children have been working on multiplication and division, finding factor pairs of numbers and beginning to use more formal written methods to clearly show their working.
