Ashton Under Hill First School

Shaping Bright Futures Together

Hawthorn wb 30th January

We've had another great week in Hawthorn class and the children have worked incredibly hard.
In English, they had a go at writing a fact file about Koalas and have done so very enthusiastically! It's wonderful to see how much progress they're making and we're very proud of them all.
In maths, Year 1s have been subtracting numbers within 20 using a range of strategies, such as using their knowledge of number bonds and counting back. Year 2s have been exploring arrays which are an arrangement of objects, numbers or pictures in columns and/or rows which help children to understand multiplication and division. You can see some of the arrays they've made in our photo gallery. Next week, we'll be exploring division in more detail.

In topic, the children found out more Antarctica which they'll be representing using their artistic skills in the next couple of weeks. We started a new topic in Computing - all about digital photography. They worked in teams to take a set of different shots and then evaluated the photographs they'd taken. We found out that it can be tricky to take an action shot, and selfies are a bit of a challenge using a traditional camera rather than a mobile or a tablet! Take a look at our photos which capture them in action on Tuesday afternoon.
We were able to go swimming again this week as the roads were clear!  The children were beautifully behaved and we can see the real progress that they are making.
Finally, it is children's mental health week next week so we will be doing lots of things around this subject.  As the theme of this is, "Lets Connect", we hope to see many of you in our classroom drop in next Friday where we can show you lots of the work we have been doing.
