Ashton Under Hill First School

Shaping Bright Futures Together

Hawthorn wb 20th March

It's been busy, busy, busy in Hawthorn class this week!
The children have been practising their writing in English by creating an alternative version of The Disgusting Sandwich story - featuring a very hungry seagull at the beach trying to gain possession of a delicious, rainbow-coloured ice lolly!
In maths, we've turned our attention to mass. This has involved lots of practical work and discussions about whether a range of objects are heavier or lighter.
On Monday afternoon, the children split into small groups to make their own sketch maps of Ashton, complete with title, key and compass rose. Next week, we're planning to use some software which will enable them to create a digital version. In computing, they used the J2E software again to make their own minibeast pictograms. They really enjoyed these activities.
In DT, we carried on with our work on freestanding structures and the children had to make a prototype for a bridge using their knowledge of triangles as a strong structure and then putting it together with spaghetti and play dough.  It was quite tricky but great fun and most of the children managed to build a working prototype!
We've also begun work on the Easter story in RE. Our learning got off to a great start on Tuesday when the 'Open the Book' team came in for a special 'Experience Easter' assembly, and will culminate in our Easter Service at St Barbara's church next Friday, to which you're all invited.
