Ashton Under Hill First School

Shaping Bright Futures Together

23 - Hawthorn wb 27th March

And so the spring term has come to an end and the children have all learnt a lot more than they knew at the start of the year!
In English, they've written their own stories about a hungry monkey in the jungle trying to get his paws on a juicy, ripe banana - inspired by our text, 'The Disgusting Sandwich'.  You can tell how much they've enjoyed this story given how much they've all written!
We've turned our attention to volume and capacity in maths, with lots of practical measuring and follow-up activities.
On Monday, we used a computing program called TuxPaint to create maps of Ashton. Unfortunately we encountered a technical glitch but the children persevered and we are very proud of the maps they made.
There was more computing on Tuesday, when the children learned about 'attributes' and collected data using a tally chart. They went on to create pictograms using J2E and were able to ask and answer questions about the information they'd collected.
Our RE lesson on Wednesday was all about Easter symbols and we finished our topic by sampling four different varieties of hot cross bun. Once again, we used a tally chart to record our favourites, with Chocolate Orange gaining the most votes - although some children wanted to vote for all of them as they were so delicious!
Finally, on Thursday, we went to Forest School.  The weather forecast was very wet and windy so we decided to go to the meadow.  As it turned out we were very lucky and the sun shone on us!  We did a small amount of work using compasses, moving in different directions and looking at half and quarter turns.  After this we had a lovely play amongst all the sheep and the baby lambs.  It was a really lovely way to end the term!
Enjoy the holidays and Happy Easter to all of you.
