Shaping Bright Futures Together

Holly Class W/B 9th October 2023

That is week 6 complete! What an exciting week we have had. Our story this week was Handa’s Surprise which continued our theme of Africa. Take a look at our photo gallery to see some of the themed activities we enjoyed this week!

In phonics this week, reception have practiced phase 2 phonemes and blending them into simple words. Year 1 have learnt the digraphs ph and ay, as well as the split digraph a-e. They were also introduced to alternative spellings for the phoneme ‘ay’: eigh, ey and ei.

In Maths this week, reception have looked at the number 4, understanding how it is composed and the different ways that it can be made from blocks using positional words such as above, below, on top and under. We found out that 4 doesn’t always look like a square! Year 1 used part whole models to create single digit number sentences. This was really tricky and we were so pleased with their perseverance and hard work!

In English this week, reception practiced their letter formation and drew simple story maps to retell the story of Jack and the Beanstalk. Year 1 worked together to create a class story map and their own individual story maps, as well as playing games to practice their punctuation. In guided reading, they looked at the story of Handa’s Surprise and identified noun phrases from the text.

The children had a great time at the school toy sale and bought some lovely things! We would like to say a massive thank you to anyone who made a purchase. The funds will be  used to purchase resources for Holly and Acorn class!

Have a great weekend everyone!
