Shaping Bright Futures Together

Oak Week Beginning 3rd July 2023

This week we have completed our summaries of A Midsummers Night Dream, the children did a brilliant job of including all the main events in this very complicated plot. They have enjoyed their first experience of studying a Shakespearean text and I hope it will inspire them to discover others. Our next writing task is to write a balanced argument and we will use our Topic focus - Protecting Our Future (which is all about plastic waste) to construct points for each side of the argument.  In Maths we have been converting between different forms of measurement and putting our multiplication and division by 10, 100, and 1000 skills to good use. We have learnt that the prefix 'milli' and 'kilo' refer to the number 1000 which has helped us to remember some of the key facts. We have also been doing our end of term assessments and they showing how hard we have worked to make progress this year.

In Science we have been taking a closer look at our skeletons and muscles, looking at the names of the different bones and the overall function the skeleton has. We created our own giant skeletons and made a working model of how a muscle works to illustrate how many of them work in pairs, contracting and relaxing in order to help us move. We also thought about how some our muscles work automatically, introducing the idea of voluntary and involuntary muscles. Earlier on in the week we had a session to discuss the physical changes that children go through during puberty and have linked how these changes affect our bones and muscles grow at this time. We have continued with our Food Technology project, by researching and designing what will go into the recipes of the quiches that we will make next week. They were designed in connection with healthy food plate to ensure that as many of the healthy food groups were included as possible. The children have chosen 2 or 3 ingredients to add to the basic recipe to make it healthy and delicious! We also linked how healthy eating helps our bodies to grow.

The Year 5's had a great time at their last sports day and helped to break some of the school records too. A big well done to them all for competing so well, we were very proud of them.
