Ashton Under Hill First School

Shaping Bright Futures Together

Hawthorn Wb 15th April

Another week has rushed by and we have been busy in the Hawthorn classroom.

In English  we have been studying performance poetry.  The children looked at different poems, identified different feature in a poem before deciding which was their favourite.  They then had to think about how they might perform this: whispered voices, loud voices, slowly etc.   This was all great practise for next week's poetry plate competition!

In Maths the Year 1s have been working on grouping and have been introduced to arrays while the Year 2s have started to find out about fractions.

We have also started our new topic this week, "London's burning!" where we are going to find out about the Great Fire of London.  To start this off we have worked on a collaborative piece of artwork for our class display and the children made a river Thames, old timbered houses with thatched roofs and lots of flames.  See the photos for the fantastic finished result.

In Music, we looked at tuned instruments.  We used the boomwhackers to see higher and lower notes and then got out a steel pan drum and the tongue drums to see if we could identify the higher and lower notes and then match them to the boomwhackers.  Lots of noisy fun was had by all!

On Friday, it was our class's turn to go up to forest school.  We were lucky with the weather and had a great time up the hill just enjoying nature and seeing how much had changed from the last time that we were there in summer!

Finally, it was time to say goodbye to Mr Leahy this week so we had a small tea party to celebrate.  It has been lovely having him in our class and we will all miss him when he return to his studies and we wish him all the very best  for the future.
