Ashton Under Hill First School

Shaping Bright Futures Together

23 24 Hawthorn Wb 11th March

It hardly seems possible that we've reached the penultimate week of term! It's certainly flown by.
Both year groups have begun their work on length and height today, but earlier in the week they enjoyed the chance to practise some of their mathematical skills on our new IPads. There are lots of games on the www.Topmarks website and don't forget that your child can also practise mental maths using the White Rose app. Both are free with no subscription needed.
In English, we've spent more time exploring the book and found out lots more information about space in the process. Next week, the children will have a go at making their own pop-up pages from information they've gathered.
In RE, we've turned our attention to Easter and have begun to prepare our performance for the church. We've also created some lovely eggs using collage techniques so look out for them on the day. Next Tuesday afternoon, a visit to St Barbara's Church has been arranged so that the children can have a good look around and see some of the features we've been talking about in class.
In Computing, the children put their skills into practice using a game called '2D Shapes Sorting using Carroll Diagrams', again accessed via Topmarks. In Topic, they compared our Ashton village location with the Amazon rainforest and thought about the effect of deforestation. They also found out the difference between human and physical geographical features and studied photos of the two locations to see which aspects they could locate.
On Tuesday, we were fortunate to participate in a special cricket coaching session. Please see Mrs Thornton's blog here for more details and a few photos.
It has been Science week this week and the children have been involved with all things Science including Zoom In pictures,  Odd One Out discussions and Whizz Bang demonstrations.  We are planning a bigger Science day later in the year so the children can take part in some further investigations, watch this space!
