Shaping Bright Futures Together

Willow wb 26.02.24

This week as part of our Science, the children have been learning about reflective surfaces. We compared light sources and objects that reflect light and described what happens when rays of light hit the objects. We also discussed the difference between opaque, translucent and transparent. The children looked at various objects and sorted them into items with a reflective surface and items that absorb light. We learned that light travels in straight lines and can bounce off objects and reflect back into our eyes. In music we have been appraising and learning to sing a new song called ‘The Dragon Song’. We accompanied this piece with our recorders where we placed G and A by listening carefully.

This week in writing, the children have been exploring various explanation texts. We looked at the different features and had a go at writing our own. We found out how a toaster and microwave work and learned new meaning of new scientific vocabulary. We acted out the process of how a toaster works which we really enjoyed and then retold the explanation, adapting it for a younger audience to help us write in clear, concise sentences. Over the next few weeks, we will be working to create our own explanation text.

In maths, we have continued our work on fractions. We have been impressed by how the children have used what they already know and applied it to other areas. The class were able to accurately place fractions on a number line and compare equivalent fractions using a fraction wall.

We have started our new half termly topic which is called 'Violent Earth' and has links with our work on Italy. The children explored what makes up the structure of the earth as well as introducing the concept of tectonic plates. We made diagrams to identify the different layers of the earth and discussed their properties. We also labelled tectonic plate maps, linking this with our previous work on Italy.
