Shaping Bright Futures Together

Willow wb 07.10.24

This week as part of our Science, the children explored the playground for different minibeasts and their habitats. We discussed that minibeasts are invertebrates and that there are various types. The class spotted many different habitats and found slugs, moths, grasshoppers, ladybirds and many more. We looked at a nature fact file to show how these creatures can be grouped into molluscs, arachnids and insects. The children enjoyed exploring their local environment and discussed their observations with each other. Take a look at some of the photographs of our minibeast hunt.

Our written work this week has been based on the non-fiction text “Book of Bones.” The children explored the features and language of this text and created their own fact file. We will compare the different animals and how they are described to the reader to create our own pages about the minibeasts we found in the school playground. The children will use conjunctions to write more complex sentences to add detail.

In Maths, the class have been learning how to use written methods to add and subtract 3 and 4 digit numbers. We will use our knowledge of place value to learn how to add and subtract using the column method. The children will learn all about regrouping when crossing the tens and hundreds and how to do this accurately. We did 'popcorn maths' to help us practise our layout of column addition.

In Art this week we have been learning to draw Viking animals including horse and dragon heads as these were commonly shown in Viking artefacts. We also explored in more detail, the reasons for the Vikings invading Britain and whether or not these were all negative. In our reading lesson we looked at the text 'How to be a Viking' by Cressida Cowell. The children looked closely at the vocabulary used and had to explain why they thought the author had made these choices.
