Ashton Under Hill First School

Shaping Bright Futures Together

Hawthorn wb 24th January

It’s been busy, busy, busy again this week and the children have thoroughly enjoyed their learning.

Our Year 1 maths lessons have focused on counting in 2s, 5s and 10s while the Year 2s have been preparing to learn their times tables.  The children have also been sharing into equal groups and looking at  how some numbers can be shared equally in many different ways.

We’ve continued our work on ‘Fatou, fetch the Water’. The children have been practising how to write longer sentences by joining two clauses with a conjunction. They’ve also been working on creating sentences in the style of the book but in a different and more familiar context – our very own school! Next week, they’ll produce their own piece of writing utilising all the skills they’ve been learning.

More work on Continents this week in Topic. The children had to solve clues by reading information about each of the continents in turn. Then, they enjoyed making Continents Fortune Tellers and they really had to use their listening skills to follow all the steps in the process.

In RE, we looked at things that might be found in a Jewish home. The children were fascinated by the artefacts we have in school which they were able to handle and explore in close detail.

We got the laptops out in Computing and the children practised their keyboard skills by dragging objects from one place to another in a matching-up game.

Finally in Science, we have been continuing with our work on Materials and the children examined objects and started to decide what properties each object had.  The most popular object was the "slinky" which was both bendy and stretchy as you can see from our photographs!
