Ashton Under Hill First School

Shaping Bright Futures Together

Hawthorn wb 6th December

It’s been another hectic week in Hawthorn Class and the children adapted well to both working in the classroom and becoming film stars for our Nativity!  We were sad not to be able to perform it live but the children have given fantastic performances and we are really looking forward to seeing the finished film.

In English the children have written letters to Father Christmas and copied them out in their best handwriting to make sure that he knows exactly what they want!

The year 2 children have worked with Mrs McCann and Miss Sheehan writing a diary entry about the Great Fire of London. They described what they could see and what it was like to be there.  To make them look authentic the children then used tea bags to make their papers look like old historical documents.  Great fun was had by all.

In Computing / Topic the children played a Great Fire of London game where they had to use historical information to order what happened, what different artefacts told us about the fire and how the fire was put out.  The children really enjoyed playing the game and worked well with a partner to find all the answers.

Last Friday afternoon the children took part in an Eco afternoon organised by Mrs Sheils.  We were finding out about electricity and what things needed electricity to work and what did not.  We then discussed renewable and non-renewable energy sources.  The children had lots of great ideas about what could be done to help the planet and they were fascinated by the geothermal energies and geysers as they shot up into the air!

Finally, we had a special treat when a local author came and read her story to the class.  Have a look at the attached pictures to see who it was and what a great job she did in keeping the children’s attention!
