Shaping Bright Futures Together

Holly Class w/b 27th February 2023

Another great week in Holly Class! We have kicked off our new topic 'Street Detectives' by learning all about the countries in the UK, as well as their capital cities and weather patterns!

We were also very excited to see that our role play area has transformed into a garden centre! As an introduction to our new science topic, we have been exploring potting seeds using garden tools and equipment, as well as using crafts to create our own items to fill it's shelves. We can't wait to see what learning opportunities our centre has for us next week.

In phonics, Reception have been learning the new sounds 'ai, ee, igh and oa' and we have talked about how 3 letters that make 1 sound are called a trigraph. Year 1 have been learning new graphemes for phonemes they are familiar with, including 'ch' (tch), 'n' (gn and kn) and 'r' (wr) as well as writing words and composing sentences including these sounds.

In literacy we have finished our work on instructions and given verbal instructions on how to make a real jam sandwich. We have learnt that we have to be very specific when giving instructions otherwise the whole jam jar will end up on top of the bread rather than what's inside it! Year 1 completed their independent writing, where they ordered pictures and used an assessment checklist to write their own set of instructions.

In maths, Reception have been ordering numbers to 10 and have began learning their number bonds to 5 using the '5 speckled frogs' song. Year 1 have been using number lines to count forwards and backwards, and have began their work on grouping numbers into 10s and 1s.

We have had lots of fun in art this week, where we have explored painting using computers. As a class we made a lovely picture of Mrs Holdsworth - she was delighted with it! Year 1 also experimented with their own paintings using the laptops.

We ended the week with World Book Day, where children came into school dressed as their favourite character. It was lovely to see all of the amazing costumes! Our day was filled with shared reading, bookmark making and even a visit from Mrs Tulley in KS2, who shared her favourite story with us all. What a treat!

Reminder of 'Meet The Teacher' for parents - Thursday 9th March at 2:30pm with Miss Palmer and Miss Hunt.     See you all next week!
