Shaping Bright Futures Together

Oak Class Week 5 Spring

Only two weeks to go now until the big performance and the excitement is building! No script week went very well, dances and singing are getting better with each day and next week will see the start of our dress rehearsals! We can’t wait to see the children in their costumes, it will make all the difference to how they will approach the rehearsals!!

In other areas of the curriculum, we have been writing an explanation text in English to explain the differences between the lives of rich and poor Mayans. The focus was split to help develop our topic knowledge and to practice our non-narrative writing skills, particularly cohesion of information within paragraphs and sentence structure.

In Maths, Year 4 have started to investigate area and Year 5 have continued to master division. But today has been Number Day so it was a great opportunity to do extra maths (Miss Miller will be delighted!)

We all took part in the Times Tables Rockstar challenge ‘Numbers Rock’, so fingers crossed we get on the leader board this time or even get placed!! All I could hear was the tip tap tip tap of keyboard keys whilst we were playing, the children were so absorbed!! Some children almost had steam coming off their fingers they were working so hard!! It got very competative at times too.

We also played a Who Wants to Be a Mathsinaire game. Sapphire were the class champions earning themselves 40 house points!!!!  We also had fun studying Fibonacci number patterns, linking this to the golden ratio in nature. In the afternoon, we used the curves created by this number pattern to create some stunning art work. The children had great fun designing and spotting well known objects which feature the infamous curves. The cake stall was a great success too – lots of delicious treats to help raise funds for the NSPCC. Check the gallery for some examples of what we produced.

In Science, on Thursday, we donned our wellies (or trainers), grabbed a clipboard and took a stroll around the village in a spot of ‘Learning Out of The Classroom’. We were on the hunt for signs of weathering, erosion and deposition to support our learning about rocks. We saw lots of examples, identified the evidence and explained what could have caused it. We made our way to the brook in Back Lane to examine what signs of erosion we could see in the water. We spotted rocks and pebbles in a range of sizes and sediment too; this is all to help us understand how rocks wear away and change over time. We had a lovely walk and even a quick paddle too.

Mathew was very proud to receive a trophy for his footballing skills last week. He brought it in to school for us all to see, there is a picture of him in our gallery.

Next week is Children’s Mental Health Week and we will be getting involved in a range of activities to raise awareness of keeping our minds healthy and focussing in on our wellbeing more than usual. Please check in each day with your child to find out what we have done.
