Ashton Under Hill First School

Shaping Bright Futures Together

Willow Class wb 19.02.24

This week we have started our new Science topic all about light. In our lesson, the children completed their beginning of topic quiz to find out what they already know about the subject. We learned about natural and artificial sources of light and what darkness means. We discussed that light travels in straight lines and some surfaces can be reflective.

The children have started learning about fractions this week. We learned how to identify fractions in shapes and sorting shapes that have equal and unequal parts. We used playdough to create equal and unequal shapes and compared and ordered fractions. We learned that the bottom number is the denominator and the top number is the numerator.

In English this week, the children have been improving their sentence structure by doing a ‘small write’. We explored the use of conjunctions to extend our sentences and varied our use of vocabulary to improve our work.

In our Art and Design lesson, we have developed a design for printing by choosing six items which are meaningful to us and combining them into our final designs. We will then be able to transfer these onto our printing blocks before producing our final pencil cases.

We look forward to sharing our exciting adventures from our Malvern residential trip with you all early next week. Keep a look out for more photos.  Here are a few from earlier in the week!
